Centreless Grinding and CBN Wheel Selection: When and Why to Switch from Conventional Abrasives

Centreless Grinding and CBN Wheel Selection: When and Why to Switch from Conventional Abrasives

Most centreless grinding operations begin their working life with conventional abrasive wheels - aluminium oxide or silicon carbide - and for many applications, those wheels remain the right choice indefinitely. But as component requirements become more demanding, materials harder to grind, or production volumes more intensive, conventional abrasives can start to impose real limitations on what the process can achieve.

CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) grinding wheels are used across medical, aerospace and automotive manufacturing for precisely this reason. When the application justifies them, they offer performance advantages that conventional wheels cannot match. Understanding when that justification exists - and when it does not - is the key to making the right tooling decision.

What Makes CBN Different

CBN is a superabrasive material, second only to diamond in hardness. Unlike conventional abrasives, which break down relatively quickly during grinding and require frequent dressing to maintain cut, CBN retains its cutting edges far longer under load. This gives CBN grinding wheels a substantially extended working life compared to conventional wheels under the right conditions.

The other key difference is thermal behaviour. CBN dissipates heat very efficiently during the grinding process. In centreless grinding, heat is a significant concern - excessive grinding temperatures cause surface damage, residual stress, and dimensional instability in finished parts. A wheel that manages heat more effectively protects the workpiece and helps maintain consistent results across longer production runs.

It is worth noting that CBN wheels perform best on ferrous materials - hardened steels, tool steels, bearing steels and similar alloys. For non-ferrous applications or non-metallic materials, diamond grinding wheels are typically the correct superabrasive choice. Getting this distinction right at the specification stage avoids costly mistakes.

Signs That Conventional Abrasives May Be Limiting Your Process

There are several situations where switching to CBN centreless grinding wheels is worth investigating seriously:

Frequent wheel dressing interruptions. If your conventional grinding wheel requires dressing every few minutes of productive grinding time, a significant proportion of your machine's working hours are being consumed by non-cutting activity. CBN wheels, by contrast, can run for substantially longer between dresses - in some applications, far longer. If dressing frequency is a production bottleneck, the case for CBN deserves careful evaluation.

Thermal damage to parts. Burn marks, discolouration, or hardness changes at the surface of ground components are indicators that heat is damaging the workpiece during grinding. If optimising coolant delivery and adjusting conventional wheel grade have not resolved the issue, the superior thermal conductivity of CBN may provide the answer.

Inconsistent size across long runs. Conventional wheels change diameter as they wear. On a high-volume run, this means the grinding gap must be periodically adjusted to compensate - and between adjustments, dimensional drift can occur. A CBN wheel that wears far more slowly maintains a more consistent diameter over the run, which supports better size control with fewer compensating interventions.

Hardened or difficult-to-grind materials. As workpiece hardness increases, conventional abrasives work harder to cut and wear faster. For components in hardened bearing steel, high-speed steel or similar alloys, CBN offers a clear performance advantage in both wheel life and cut quality.

What CBN Wheels Will Not Solve

It is important to be direct on this point: CBN wheels are not a universal remedy for centreless grinding problems. If the root cause of a quality issue lies elsewhere - in work-rest blade wear, control wheel condition, spindle play, or incorrect machine setup - fitting a CBN wheel will not fix it. The underlying problem must still be identified and addressed.

CBN wheels also represent a higher initial outlay than conventional abrasive wheels. The economics only stack up when the extended wheel life, reduced dressing downtime and improved process consistency deliver enough efficiency and quality gain to justify the investment. For low-volume or intermittent grinding of softer materials, a conventional abrasive wheel will typically remain the more cost-effective choice.

Specification also matters greatly with superabrasives. A CBN wheel selected with the wrong bond type, concentration or grit size for the application will underperform - and the relatively high cost of the wheel makes that underperformance more expensive than an equivalent mistake with a conventional wheel. Getting the specification right from the outset is essential.

CBN Mounted Points and Internal Grinding Applications

Alongside CBN grinding wheels for centreless operations, CBN diamond mounted points serve a distinct but related role. Where a component requires internal grinding - bores, holes or recesses - mounted points allow the same superabrasive performance benefits to be applied in a geometry suited to internal features. These are used alongside centreless operations as part of a complete precision grinding process, particularly in medical device and aerospace component manufacture where both external and internal surfaces may need to meet tight tolerance requirements.

Getting the Specification Right

Selecting the correct CBN wheel specification for a centreless grinding application involves assessing workpiece material and hardness, required surface finish, diameter and width requirements, machine power and speed capability, and coolant availability. Each of these factors influences the appropriate bond system, grit size, and concentration for the wheel.

At Workblades & Formers Ltd, we supply CBN grinding wheels and CBN diamond mounted points for centreless and precision grinding applications across the UK and Europe, and we can advise on specification based on your specific application requirements. We also supply the full range of conventional abrasive wheels - including centreless grinding wheels, control wheels, ceramic grinding wheels, and silicon carbide grinding wheels - so the starting point is always the application, not a preference for any particular product type.

If you are reviewing your current abrasive specification, or investigating whether CBN might be the right choice for a specific operation, contact our technical team. We can review your application and help you reach the right decision - whether that points toward superabrasives or confirms that your current conventional wheels remain the correct tool for the job.
