A grinding wheel is a "self-sharpening" tool, but it needs help to stay true. Whether a shop is using silicon carbide grinding wheels for non-ferrous work or aluminium oxide for steel, the abrasive grains eventually dull or the wheel face becomes "loaded" with metal. This is where diamond dressing tools become the most important accessory in the cabinet.

The purpose of dressing is twofold: it "trues" the wheel (making it perfectly concentric to the spindle) and it "dresses" the wheel (shearing off dull grains to expose sharp new ones). If you don't dress the wheel, it starts to rub rather than cut, creating massive heat that can lead to surface cracking.
