High End On Work guides deflected toward grinding wheel

If you observe work guides deflected toward the grinding wheel, or if the ends of your workpiece are finishing higher than the centre, precise alignment of your centreless grinding tools is required.

As centreless grinding specialists, we recommend the following adjustments based on the volume of your production run.

Initial Guide Alignment

The first step in troubleshooting deflection is to ensure your guides are set perfectly parallel to the face of the abrasive grinding wheels. This provides the necessary lateral support to prevent the workpiece from shifting during the grind.

Short-Run Adjustments (Few Pieces)

If you are only grinding a small batch and notice the centre of the work is still low, you can make a temporary adjustment without redressing the wheel:

  • Housing Angle: Increase the angle of the regulating wheel housing by small increments (approximately ½°).

  • Important Note: When using this method, do not dress the wheel or alter the angle of the truing attachment.

  • Alternative: You can achieve a similar result by decreasing the truing angle and retruing the wheel while keeping the housing angle static.

Long-Run Adjustments (High Volume)

For larger production runs where periodic wheel dressing is necessary, the adjustment should be made at the truing attachment to maintain long-term consistency.

  • Truing Attachment Angle: Increase the angle of the regulating wheel truing attachment by small amounts (approximately 1/8°).

  • Redressing: Once the angle is adjusted, redress the wheel using your diamond dressing tools until the work dimensions are correct.

  • Important Note: In this scenario, you must not change the angle of the housing.

Support and Tooling Precision

Ensuring your workrest blades are in peak condition and correctly positioned on the horizontal centreline will help mitigate the pressure that causes guide deflection. Whether you are using ceramic grinding wheels or silicon carbide grinding wheels, maintaining these fine geometric relationships is a key focus of centreless grinding training in the UK.

By following these specific angular adjustments, you ensure that your centreless grinding machine produces a perfectly straight profile across the entire length of the component.
